Stream of consciousness poem -- part 41

Chapter 41

October 29, 2011 – At the mental hospital

Deep breath
And then I walk
Through the double doors
Into the common room
A room with sofas and chairs
And a television
That is on
Even though no one is
Around

A woman
In a blue scrubs
Directs me
To an empty table
Near the double doors
A dining table with
Eight chairs

I sit
Alone
At the table
For eight
And wait

My brother
Enters
Looking somewhere
Between happy to see me
Nervous for the future
Embarrassed to have been brought to this place
And scared

I smile
As he sits next to me
At the table for eight
Where he probably
Had lunch

“How are you?”
I ask
He answers with a
Weak smile

A nurse
In comic scrubs
Arrives
Carrying a brown packet
Of paperwork
In hand

At once
She puts me at ease
By saying
“This is not
Where your brother
Belongs”

She walks us
Both of us
Through the paperwork
In the brown
Packet

It is
A lot to take in
But not too much
Until she tells me
That my brother
Could still die suddenly
From the internal damage
From the
Drano

And that
Is too much
To
Take in
